This book is written in a simple language & is excellent for review. The info are presented in an outline format for quick reading. However, I think it would be better if you can read it in conjunction with some other textbooks like Guyton’s Textbook of Medical Physiology, because some details are required to complete the picture. Like all the books of this series, you’ll find the diagrams which summarize the salient points of each topic valuable aids to learning or revision.

Of all the Illustrated Series Books provided by Churchhill Livingstone, by far this book is the most concise,and readable on the subject.


This book is a must have to those in the medical field.

This is an entirely new and very succinct general book summarizing genetics and its medical applications.

**Purpose**

It is primarily directed to medical students, whose time is limited, with the aim of providing a large volume of information in a study-friendly and exam-preparatory manner. This goal is beautifully achieved in an incredibly concise 100 pages of text and figures, based around three integrated sections describing, in turn, developmental biology, medical genetics, and clinical applications of genetics. The flow is deliberate. This book more than reaches its goals of providing a quick and efficient review of the subject because it is so invitingly concise and therefore intensely readable.



**Audience**


Although it might be considered redundant in a crowded marketplace for medical students, this book is extremely appealing and accessible and, indeed, other student groups may also avail themselves of it.

**Features**

The detail is greater than would be suggested from the page count alone. This is attained largely because the figures/illustrations in each chapter are superb. They are composed of beautiful and clear line drawings with pertinent interposed text. Each of the 48 chapters is composed of a simple but effective format — a single page with a figure facing a single page of text. This format is disarmingly engaging to the reader, encouraging progression through an otherwise dense subject area. The text is very well written and easy to read. The figures live by the axiom, “a picture saves a thousand words,” integrating very well with the text. The subheadings are helpful and the choice of clinical examples is appropriate, although necessarily brief. There is a good glossary and index.

**Assessment**

Although the presentation style may not appeal to all, the effective, succinct nature of the book will overcome any skepticism. Overall, this is an excellent, memorable book with a refreshing means of presentation.

Angina: An Atlas of Investigation and Management

Angina is most commonly associated with myocardial ischemia, but may also be symptomatic of valvular heart disease, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or uncontrolled high blood pressure. While chronic or stable angina is predictable and relatively easy to manage, it is the sudden and unexpected onset of symptoms in patients with unstable angina that represents the most significant challenge to the clinician, being a risk indicator for acute MI, severe cardiac arrhythmia or even cardiac arrest. Since chest pain can also indicate a number of other less critical conditions, it is important that the clinician can rapidly and accurately determine the true risk status of the patient in each case. In this atlas, the authors guide the reader through the assessment of the patient with chest pain, beginning with the simple physical examination and evaluation of other risk factors that may be present, progressing to non-invasive tests such as EKG and various imaging techniques, and concluding with coronary angiography. The diagnostic value of each of these techniques is compared and appropriate guidance given on evaluating clinical findings.

Pharmacology and Vitreoretinal Surgery (Developments in Ophthalmology)

Since the advent of pars plana vitrectomy, immense technical advances in the treatment of retinal diseases have been made. However, some mechanically based limitations of vitreoretinal surgery may result in incomplete removal of the vitreous, especially at the vitreoretinal interface and at the vitreous base. Here, pharmacology can be of assistance. For instance, enzymes that cleave the vitreoretinal junction without damaging the retina or which induce liquefaction may be applied. Neuroprotective and antiproliferative agents may hold the promise of preserving neuronal function when the retina is detached or when proliferative vitreoretinopathy or proliferative diabetic retinopathy has developed. Earlier intervention is possible and can save visual function before the retinal cytoarchitecture is destroyed. Consequently, pharmacologic vitreolysis will change the current concepts of treating retinal and macular diseases. This volume is the first comprehensive up-date on pharmacology-assisted vitreoretinal surgery. Researchers in the fields of medical and surgical retina as well as retinal specialists and vitreoretinal surgeons in clinics will benefit from this topical summary.
